Pablo Barrios scored inside the first minute and Ademola Lookman added a second from a rebound as Atlético Madrid beat Manchester United 2-0 in the Champions League. Leny Yoro was sent off in the 74th minute for denying Jonathan David a clear scoring chance.
Madrid, Spain: Manchester United were behind before most of the stadium had settled. Barrios put Atlético in front within the first minute on Tuesday night, and Michael Carrick’s side never found a way back, finishing the match with ten men after Yoro’s dismissal and losing 2-0 in the league phase.

Barrios’s goal came in the opening seconds and set the tone for the evening. United responded with chances of their own. Bryan Mbeumo had an early shot go wide and later forced a save from Jan Oblak, while Carlos Baleba, making his first start for the club, headed straight at the goalkeeper from a corner.
Chances at both ends
Alex Grimaldo hit the woodwork with a free kick, and Atlético thought they had a second just before half-time when Johnny Cardoso scored, only for VAR to rule it out for a handball by Marcos Llorente in the build-up. After the break Julián Álvarez hit the post, and Bruno Fernandes had an effort go just wide before another struck the crossbar.
Yoro sent off, Lookman finishes it
The match turned in the 74th minute. After a VAR check, referee Glenn Nyberg sent off Yoro for denying David a goalscoring opportunity as the last defender. Some observers felt the challenge was harsh. Five minutes later, in the 79th, Lookman scored from a rebound after the United goalkeeper had saved David’s effort, and the contest was over.
What it means for United
The result leaves both clubs with one win and one defeat from their first two league-phase games. It adds to a difficult run for United: on Saturday they were held to a 1-1 draw by ten-man Tottenham at Old Trafford, a result that came after a stoppage-time Dominic Solanke equaliser. Atlético arrived in good form too, having beaten Alavés 2-1 in La Liga at the weekend. United’s next game is at Leeds on Sunday in the Premier League.
