Viking earned a first Champions League point with a 3-3 draw against Bayern Munich in Stavanger on Tuesday. Harry Kane scored twice to turn a two-goal deficit into a lead, but Michael Olise’s dismissal and Herman Haugen’s late equaliser denied Bayern victory.
Stavanger, Norway: Bayern Munich were two goals down inside 40 minutes at Lyse Arena. They led by the 71st minute, and they still left with one point, after a red card and a header at the back post in the 90th minute.
Viking’s fast start
The hosts scored in the second minute, when Gianni Stensness headed in a Zlatko Tripić corner. Peter Christiansen doubled the lead in the 38th minute on the counterattack, after a pass from Erik Botheim. Bayern had 65 per cent of the possession over the match, but they went into the break trailing 2-0.
Kane drags Bayern back
Harry Kane changed the game after the interval. He converted a penalty, won by Konrad Laimer, in the 54th minute and headed in a Joshua Kimmich cross around the hour to level at 2-2. Luis DÃaz put Bayern ahead in the 71st minute, finishing from close range after a pass from Laimer.
Olise sees red
The lead did not last. Michael Olise was shown a second yellow card shortly after DÃaz’s goal, leaving Bayern with ten men for the final stretch. Viking, helped by their supporters, pushed forward, and Haugen headed in at the back post in the 90th minute from a cross by Tripić. Bayern finished with 25 shots to Viking’s eight, but the Norwegian side’s goalkeeper made several saves to keep them in the contest.
A first point for Viking
The draw was Viking’s first point in the Champions League and came in their first home match in the competition. Bayern, who beat Bodø/Glimt 5-0 on matchday one, have four points from two games. Their visit to Stavanger was one of the home fixtures the league-phase draw handed Viking, alongside PSV Eindhoven.
