Nahida Akter took 3 for 15 and Marufa Akter 2 for 6 as Bangladesh bowled Indonesia out for 58 to win their Women’s Asia Cup opener by 71 runs in Dubai. Sobhana Mostary made 40 in her 100th international and Shorna Akter an unbeaten 31 from 18 balls, but Bangladesh lost five wickets for 21 runs in 17 deliveries to finish on 129 for 8. Ni Kadek Ariani took 3 for 28 on Indonesia’s tournament debut.
Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Indonesia’s bowlers held Bangladesh to 129 on their Asia Cup debut. Their batters lasted 17.3 overs.
The first half of the evening was a genuine surprise. Ni Made Putri Suwandewi found swing from the outset under lights, and although Bangladesh’s openers hit four boundaries in the first two overs, she struck in her second, Juairiya Ferdous mistiming an inswinger to cover point. Bangladesh were 32 for 1 at the end of the powerplay and 56 for 2 at drinks.
Mostary’s Hundredth
Sobhana Mostary, playing her 100th international match, did the holding together. She was 17 at drinks and finished with 40 from 42, the innings on which the total was built.
Bangladesh reached 105 for 3 with three overs in hand. What followed was five wickets for 21 runs in 17 deliveries, Ni Kadek Ariani taking two of them at the death, and Shorna Akter — the most fluent batter in the innings — spending much of it stranded at the non-striker’s end. She finished unbeaten on 31 from 18. Ariani ended with 3 for 28, Ni Luh Dewi with 2 for 21.
The Fourteenth Over
Whatever confidence 129 gave Indonesia lasted about as long as their opening pair.
Marufa Akter had Maria Corazon lbw for 12 and Rahmawati Pangestuti caught by Ritu Moni for 9, and finished with 2 for 6. Shanjida Akter Meghla trapped Ni Luh Dewi in front. Fahima Khatun had captain Ni Putu Ayu Nanda Sakarini lbw for 2 from 15 balls, an innings that told the story of the chase — the required rate was never the problem, the strike rate was.

Nahida Akter struck in the 12th over and then took the innings apart in the 14th. She had Suwandewi caught off a mistimed pull for 3. Sofia Velic, making her T20I debut, was run out for 1 by a quick throw from deep fine leg. Nahida then bowled Ariani for 2 to finish the over. Indonesia were eight down.
Two more run-outs completed it, the last of them off Rabeya Khan’s bowling in the 18th over when Dara Paramitha misjudged a single and Fahima Khatun’s throw beat her by a distance. Four lbws, three run-outs, 58 all out.
Nahida took 3 for 15 and the Player of the Match award.
Group B
Bangladesh, champions in 2018, take two points from their opening match. Indonesia, at their first Asia Cup, have none.
Group B also contains defending champions Sri Lanka and hosts the United Arab Emirates, with each side playing the other three once and the top two going through. The semi-finals are on 10 and 11 September and the final on the 13th, all at this ground.
