Brison Fernandes and Irfan Yadwad scored twice each as Chennaiyin FC beat East Bengal 5-3 in a Chennai thriller for their first ISL win of the season. East Bengal pulled goals back, including one from the spot, but could not complete a comeback.
Chennai, India: Chennaiyin had scored once in their first four league games. On Saturday night they scored five in one, and it took all of them to beat East Bengal in an eight-goal match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
Fernandes fires Chennaiyin ahead
Brison Fernandes put Chennaiyin in front in the fourth minute and added a second before the 20-minute mark, a long-range curler that went in off the post. East Bengal replied in the 29th minute through Aké Loba, but Chennaiyin restored a two-goal cushion from the penalty spot just before half-time after Fernandes was fouled in the box.
Spot-kick, then Yadwad takes over
East Bengal pulled one back in the 47th minute when Dani RamÃrez converted a penalty, awarded for a handball inside the Chennaiyin box. But Yadwad answered around the hour mark, turning in a loose ball from close range, and added a second a few minutes later with a clinical finish on the counter-attack. That made it 5-2.
A late consolation
David Lalhlansanga scored for East Bengal in stoppage time, making the final scoreline 5-3. The result ended East Bengal’s run of two straight league wins and gave Chennaiyin the first league victory of their 2026-27 campaign.
