Hasan Mahmud’s 6 for 90 ends Jangoo’s 133 as West Indies make 356 and lead Bangladesh by 268 at Day 2 stumps in Sylhet

Hasan Mahmud took 6 for 90, his first five-wicket haul in a home Test, as West Indies were bowled out for 356 after Amir Jangoo’s 133. Bangladesh closed Day 2 in Sylhet on 88 for 3, trailing by 268 runs.

Sylhet, Bangladesh: Hasan Mahmud dragged Bangladesh back into the second Test on Friday morning, but West Indies’ seamers took the initiative straight back. Mahmud’s new-ball burst finished the visitors’ innings on 356, and by the time bad light ended play early Bangladesh were 88 for 3 and 268 runs behind.

Two wickets in two balls

West Indies resumed on 235 for 4 with Amir Jangoo on 111 and Justin Greaves on 35. Jangoo added 22 to reach 133, with 13 fours and two sixes, before Mahmud bowled him with the first over of the second new ball. The next delivery had Roston Chase caught behind by Litton Das for nought, and Bangladesh briefly had a hat-trick ball to bowl.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz then bowled Greaves for 51, and Mahmud returned to remove Joshua Bishop for 23 and Shamar Joseph for 16. Jomel Warrican stayed unbeaten on 27, and Mehidy ended the innings when he had Jayden Seales leg-before for 15. West Indies were all out in 106.4 overs. Mahmud finished with 6 for 90 from 24 overs, and Mehidy took 2 for 82.

Bangladesh lose three before the light goes

Nayeem Hasan edged Seales to Brandon King at slip for 5 in the fifth over. Tanzid Hasan was caught at cover by debutant Kevin Wickham off Greaves for 16, and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto was bowled by Joseph for 18 to make it 51 for 3.

Towhid Hridoy (29*) and Mushfiqur Rahim (19*) steadied the innings with an unbroken stand before play was stopped early for bad light after 40 overs. Bangladesh need 69 more runs to avoid the follow-on.

Shadman’s injury and the road ahead

Bangladesh also had an injury worry. Opener Shadman Islam hurt his ankle while chasing a ball to the boundary during the West Indies innings and was taken to hospital, and his availability to bat is unclear. Litton Das, Mehidy, Mahmud, Taskin Ahmed and Taijul Islam are still to come in.

West Indies lead the two-match series 1-0 after their eight-wicket win in the first Test at Mirpur, and Jangoo’s hundred had given them the platform on a bad-light-shortened opening day.

Close of play, Day 2: West Indies 356 all out (106.4 overs). Amir Jangoo 133, Kevin Wickham 61, Justin Greaves 51, Jomel Warrican 27*. Bowling: Hasan Mahmud 6/90, Mehidy Hasan Miraz 2/82, Taskin Ahmed 2/90. Bangladesh 88/3 (40 overs). Towhid Hridoy 29*, Mushfiqur Rahim 19*. West Indies lead by 268 runs.
