Lenny Joseph’s double stuns AC Milan as Ferencváros stay perfect in the Europa League

Lenny Joseph scored twice in the second half as Ferencváros beat AC Milan 2-0 at San Siro in the Europa League. Goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani’s error handed Joseph the first, and Milan are left with just three points from four league-phase games.

Milan, Italy: Days after beating Inter in the derby, AC Milan slipped into deeper trouble in Europe at San Siro. Ferencváros left Italy with a 2-0 win and a perfect record from four games, a result that owed everything to Lenny Joseph and the 52nd minute.

Torriani’s touch gifts the opener

The goal came from a back-pass. Koni De Winter played the ball back to Lorenzo Torriani, who was making his full debut in goal, and the goalkeeper’s heavy touch let Kristoffer Zachariassen press. Joseph followed up and turned the loose ball into an empty net.

Torriani, who made five saves in the match, had kept Milan in it until then. Joseph had been denied several times before the break, but the first goal changed the night, and Milan chased the game from there.

Zachariassen supplies the second

The second arrived in the 66th minute. A ricochet in midfield opened a two-on-one break for Ferencváros, Zachariassen squared the ball and Joseph finished into an empty net again for his second goal of the night.

It was a counter-attack against a Milan side pushing forward to find a way back, and it killed the game.

A red card changes nothing

Milan did get a chance to recover. Substitute Bamidele Yusuf was sent off for Ferencváros after a VAR review showed him raising an elbow into Mario Gila’s face, shortly after the 75th minute. Ruben Amorim’s side had around a quarter of an hour against ten men, and they could not take advantage.

Milan fall further behind

The defeat was Milan’s third in four Europa League matches. They have three points, sit outside the top 24 and direct qualification for the last 16 is now a long shot. Their only win so far came in the 4-0 victory over Salzburg, built on Alphadjo Cissè’s hat-trick, and the 3-1 derby win over Inter last Saturday had offered some hope of a turnaround.

Ferencváros, by contrast, have won all four of their games and have made a strong start to the league phase.
