Havertz strikes early as Arsenal beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield to end a 14-year wait and go top

Kai Havertz scored in the 16th minute as Arsenal beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield, their first Premier League win there since 2012. The result lifts Arsenal to the top of the table on 24 points, with Liverpool fifth and nine points behind.

Liverpool, England: Arsenal waited 14 years for this one. A single early goal from Kai Havertz, and a defence that refused to break under heavy second-half pressure, gave Mikel Arteta’s side a 1-0 win at Anfield on Sunday and sent them to the top of the Premier League.

Havertz punishes a Liverpool error

The decisive moment came in the 16th minute. Arsenal won the ball back as Liverpool tried to play out from the back, and Declan Rice delivered a low cross into the box. Havertz was waiting at the far post and finished from close range.

Liverpool push, Arsenal hold

Liverpool dominated large spells of the first half and came close more than once. Florian Wirtz hit the crossbar with a free kick, Alexis Mac Allister headed over when unmarked, and several penalty appeals were turned down. In the second half Alisson Becker kept Liverpool in the game with a fine save to deny Christos Tzolis, but Arsenal’s defence held. It was their sixth clean sheet in nine league games.

A drought ends, a table shifts

The win was Arsenal’s first at Anfield since 2012, ending a 14-year winless run on the ground. It was their eighth victory of the season and left them on 24 points, three clear of Manchester City, who had lost 1-0 to Brighton. Brighton remain the only team to have beaten Arsenal this season. For Liverpool, in fifth on 15 points, it was a first defeat since 11 October.

Result: Liverpool 0 Arsenal 1 (Kai Havertz 16′). Premier League, Anfield, Liverpool, Sunday 1 November 2026.
