Fábio Silva’s 89th-minute strike earned Borussia Dortmund a 2-2 draw at Bayern Munich in Der Klassiker after Harry Kane hit the crossbar from a second-half penalty. Konrad Laimer and Dayot Upamecano scored for Bayern, who stay top on goal difference with both sides on 18 points.
Munich, Germany: Bayern had the chances to make this a statement night, and Dortmund took the point anyway. In front of 75,000 at the Allianz Arena, the Bundesliga’s two unbeaten sides stayed unbeaten, but only because Silva punished a blocked clearance with a finish low across goal and Kane could not turn a 56th-minute spot-kick into a lead.
Laimer pounces before the break
Bayern, who made six changes from their midweek DFB-Pokal win over Magdeburg and brought back Kane and Kimmich, started on the front foot, with Michael Olise hitting the woodwork early, and were then hit by two forced changes. Ismael Saibari and Serge Gnabry were both forced off in the first half, replaced by Nathaniel Brown and Josip Stanišić. Dortmund thought they had scored through Jobe Bellingham on 34 minutes, but VAR ruled the goal out.
Bayern did not waste the reprieve. In the 38th minute Laimer intercepted a loose pass and combined with Olise to run through. Gregor Kobel parried the first shot, and Laimer put away the rebound for a 1-0 half-time lead.
Kane’s penalty, then a swing
The second half turned on a handball. Felix Nmecha blocked a Kane shot with his arm, and the England captain stepped up in the 56th minute and sent the penalty against the crossbar. Four minutes later Dortmund were level. Carney Chukwuemeka set up Serhou Guirassy after Dortmund won possession, and the striker beat Jonas Urbig low at the near post.
Bayern answered quickly. In the 66th minute Joshua Kimmich picked out Kane at the far post, the striker nodded the ball back across goal, and Upamecano turned it in from close range to restore the lead. It was the kind of sequence the home side had been threatening all night, and it appeared to settle the contest.
Silva’s late sting
Kane hit the post in the 75th minute and shot narrowly wide three minutes later, missed chances that would haunt Bayern. Lennart Karl, on for Olise in the 84th, then struck the crossbar in stoppage time, but by then Dortmund had equalised. Aleksandar Pavlović’s clearance was blocked in the 89th minute, and Silva swept a low finish across Urbig and into the far corner.
The result extends a strong start for both clubs. Bayern, who won 3-1 at Freiburg without Vincent Kompany in their previous league match, remain top of the table by goal difference. Dortmund, under Niko Kovač, are level with them on 18 points.
Bayern now turn to Europe, with a Champions League tie against Atlético Madrid on Tuesday.
Result: Bayern Munich 2-2 Borussia Dortmund (Bundesliga, matchday 8, Allianz Arena). Bayern: Laimer 38’, Upamecano 66’. Dortmund: Guirassy 60’, Silva 89’. Half-time: 1-0. Kane missed a penalty (56’). Bayern and Dortmund both 18 points; Bayern top on goal difference.
