Rogers, Palmer break 10-man Manchester United as Chelsea deepen Carrick’s crisis

Manchester United were the better side for 45 minutes at Stamford Bridge and the beaten one by the end. Morgan Rogers’s solo goal and a Cole Palmer penalty, awarded after Lisandro Martinez was sent off for a second yellow card, gave Chelsea a 2-0 win. United remain on seven points from nine games, sit 17th, and have won just twice in all competitions this season.

London, England: The afternoon began as a referendum on Michael Carrick’s future and ended as a verdict on it. Manchester United arrived at Stamford Bridge in the bottom half of the table, booed off their own pitch the weekend before, and facing questions about whether their head coach would last the week. For half an hour they played as though they had been waiting all season for a reason to believe. Then the match turned, and the old problems came back with it.

Chelsea, under Xabi Alonso, climbed to 16 points and into the top four. United, with one win, four draws and four defeats, are level on points with 18th-placed Crystal Palace and one clear of Nottingham Forest. They are nine points behind Chelsea and 14 behind the leaders, Manchester City and Arsenal.

A First Half That Promised More

United were the more convincing side before the break and still had nothing to show for it. They edged possession at 51% at half-time and held the advantage on expected goals, roughly 1.0 to Chelsea’s 0.28. Matheus Cunha thought he had scored in the 34th minute, but the goal was ruled out. Amad Diallo and Pedro Neto both had clear openings and both wasted them. At the other end, Moises Caicedo struck the base of the post, with the ball deflecting off him from a Palmer corner. Estevao, making his first Premier League start of the season, made a lively impression for Chelsea but could not break through either.

The teams went in level, and United had no reward for the better football.

Five Minutes That Changed the Match

Five minutes after the restart, the game turned. Romeo Lavia won the ball in midfield and found Rogers, who surged through the centre of the pitch, got past Harry Maguire and lifted a finish over Senne Lammens in the 50th minute. United gave him the freedom of the park and paid for it.

The collapse that followed was largely self-inflicted. Martinez was booked in the 59th minute for pulling Rogers’s shirt. Four minutes later he went in forearm-first on Wesley Fofana while defending a corner. Referee Peter Bankes went to the pitchside monitor, awarded a penalty and showed the Argentine a second yellow card. It was Martinez’s second red card for the club, after his dismissal in April’s home defeat to Leeds.

Palmer stepped up in the 64th minute and drove the penalty past Lammens. It was his 50th Premier League goal for Chelsea, reached in just 105 appearances. The contest was effectively over, and the second half belonged to Chelsea entirely: by expected goals, they created more than two in the second half to United’s 0.07.

Carrick Under the Spotlight

Chelsea finished with 59% of the possession and 18 shots to United’s 12, with nine on target to five. United committed 20 fouls to Chelsea’s eight. Lammens kept the score down late on, denying Estevao in the 84th minute.

Carrick did not look at Martinez as the defender walked down the tunnel. Asked by TNT Sports whether he felt let down, he replied simply: “No.” He said he had not yet watched the incident back, but acknowledged its weight. “A huge moment,” he told Match of the Day. On the supporters who sang his name while booing the players, he spoke of a lot of emotion in the stadium. He said he expects to be in charge for United’s next match, on Tuesday.

The Numbers Behind the Crisis

This is the worst start to a Premier League season in United’s history. They had only seven points from their first eight matches, below the previous low of nine set under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2019-20. Their six points after six games was the lowest since 1986, and their one win from seven was the fewest at that stage since the same year. It is only the third time United have been in the bottom half of the table after eight matches. They have yet to win a Premier League away game in five attempts this season.

The picture is no better across all competitions. United have won just two of 13 matches in 2026-27: a 5-2 comeback against Ipswich Town at Old Trafford in August and a 4-0 Champions League win over FK Sabah on September 10. They have not won since, a run of nine matches. A 3-2 Carabao Cup home defeat to Brighton on September 16, after leading 2-0 inside 10 minutes, was the first time in 50 years United had lost at Old Trafford after going two goals up. It was also their second straight first-match cup exit, following last season’s loss to Grimsby Town.

In Europe, United followed the win over Sabah with defeats to Atletico Madrid (2-0) and Como (4-1), leaving them 21st in the league phase table. After Como, captain Bruno Fernandes criticised the tactical plan.

What Comes Next

There is no time to regroup. United host AS Roma in the Champions League at Old Trafford on Tuesday, then welcome Aston Villa in the Premier League on November 8. Martinez now faces an automatic suspension. Chelsea have the momentum and a place in the top four. United have a squad that has not won in six weeks and a head coach whose backing is being tested with every result.

Score: Chelsea 2-0 Manchester United (Rogers 50′, Palmer 64′ pen; Martinez sent off 63′)
Top Performer: Morgan Rogers (Chelsea), who scored the opener and drove Chelsea forward after the break
