Rybakina seals year-end No. 1 as teenage wildcard Pohankova stuns Osaka

Elena Rybakina beat Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-3 to lock up the year-end world No. 1 ranking, while 18-year-old wildcard Mia Pohankova stunned Naomi Osaka 6-3, 7-5 and Leylah Fernandez and Alycia Parks also reached the Pan Pacific Open quarter-finals in Tokyo.

Tokyo, Japan: Thursday’s last-16 matches at the WTA 500 event settled the top of the 2026 rankings, ended a home favourite’s week and set up two quarter-finals with a distinct edge. The headline result belonged to the world No. 1, but the day’s sharpest shock came from a teenager.

Rybakina closes the book on the year-end race

Top seed Elena Rybakina began her tournament with a first-round bye and an all-Kazakhstan meeting with Yulia Putintseva. She won it 6-2, 6-3, and the result carried far more weight than the scoreline. Rybakina needed one win in Tokyo to guarantee that Aryna Sabalenka could not overtake her, and she got it: she will finish 2026 as the world No. 1 for the first time.

Before the match Rybakina led Sabalenka by 1,951 points, 9,501 to 7,550. She first reached No. 1 after winning the US Open last month, and her season has also brought the Australian Open title and four tour-level trophies, the latest in Ningbo. Tokyo supplied the finishing touch, in straight sets.

Next comes a reunion. Rybakina plays Leylah Fernandez in the quarter-finals, a rematch of the Ningbo final that Rybakina won. The WTA Finals in Indian Wells begin on 8 November, in a field that was completed when Marta Kostyuk retired in Ningbo and handed Karolina Muchova the last place.

An 18-year-old ends Osaka’s homecoming

Naomi Osaka had the Ariake Coliseum crowd behind her, and a first-round win over Jasmine Paolini to build on. She lost 6-3, 7-5 in one hour and 35 minutes to Mia Pohankova, a Slovak wildcard who turned 18 a week earlier and won the Wimbledon junior singles title in 2025. Pohankova now plays Alycia Parks for a place in the semi-finals.

Fernandez and Parks keep their draws alive

Leylah Fernandez beat Belgium’s Elise Mertens 6-2, 7-6(8), taking the second-set tie-break 10-8 to avoid a decider and book the Rybakina rematch. Alycia Parks needed only 6-3, 6-1 to beat Australia’s Kimberly Birrell and earn the meeting with Pohankova.

The field had already thinned before the round began. Second seed Maja Chwalinska withdrew with a left thigh injury and fourth seed Belinda Bencic with a right ankle injury. Alex Eala, who came from a set down to beat Talia Gibson, had reached the last eight earlier in the round.
