Lillestrøm, Norway: Real Sociedad arrived without a win from their first two league-phase games. By the time the first half ended they had effectively settled the third, and by the final whistle they had turned a tricky trip into the biggest scoreline of Europa League matchday three.
Three goals in eight minutes
Sergio Gómez scored in the 25th and 27th minutes to put the visitors in control, and Luka Sučić made it 3-0 with a cross-shot just after the half-hour. Mikel Oyarzabal was the creator, setting up three goals in eight minutes. Lillestrøm had no answer, and the home side went in at the interval three goals down.
A penalty saved, then more goals
Lillestrøm briefly had a way back. In the 50th minute they were awarded a penalty, but Unai Marrero saved Thomas Olsen’s effort and the Real Sociedad goalkeeper kept the clean sheet intact.
The second half belonged to the substitutes and Sučić. Orri Óskarsson, introduced from the bench, scored in the 64th minute. Sučić then completed his brace after an error by the home goalkeeper, before fellow substitute Arsen Zakharyan added the sixth in the 80th.
A first win at last
The result was Real Sociedad’s first victory of the league phase and lifted them to four points from three games. Lillestrøm remain on one point. With five matchdays still to play, Real Sociedad have turned a stuttering start into momentum.
