Sachin Khilari sets a Games record at 15.87m as India sweep the men’s shot put F46 podium at the Asian Para Games

Sachin Khilari threw a Games-record 15.87 metres to defend his men’s shot put F46 title at the Asian Para Games in Nagoya on Wednesday. India swept the podium, with Mohd Yasser taking silver at 15.06 metres and Parveen bronze at 14.94 metres.

Nagoya, Japan: Sachin Khilari had the gold in hand long before his last throw. He took the final attempt anyway. Already clear after an opening effort of 15.79 metres, the Paris Paralympic silver medallist sent the shot out to 15.87 with his sixth and last throw, and the mark set a new Games record in the F46 class.

Gold settled early, the record saved for the end

The opening throw put Khilari in front, and he stayed there for the rest of the competition. His final attempt added 0.08 metres to that first mark and turned a comfortable win into a record. His winning margin over Yasser was 0.81 metres, a gap that left the contest for silver and bronze as the only live question in the ring.

Yasser and Parveen complete the sweep

Mohd Yasser took silver with 15.06 metres, a season-best mark. Parveen added bronze with 14.94 metres, only 0.12 metres behind Yasser. Together with Khilari, the trio gave India all three medals in the event.

It was India’s second podium sweep of the Games. On Tuesday, Devender Kumar led a clean sweep of the men’s F43/F44/F62/F64 discus, where placings were decided on Raza points rather than raw distance. The shot put sweep needed no such arithmetic. Distance alone told the story.

A decorated defence

Khilari arrived in Aichi-Nagoya as the reigning champion from the previous Asian Para Games in China, and he left with the title retained. He is a two-time world champion in the F46 class and won silver at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, so the Games record adds another entry to a long list of big-event results.

A silver in the women’s event, and the medal count

Bhagyashri Jadhav added to the day’s haul with silver in the women’s shot put F34. She threw a personal-best 8.19 metres on her third attempt, behind China’s Zou Lijuan, who won with a Games-record 9.07. Agency reports described it as Jadhav’s second consecutive silver in the event at the Asian Para Games.

The medals followed Praveen Kumar’s Games-record T64 high jump gold earlier on Wednesday. Agency reports put India fifth in the medal table with 45 medals, 12 of them gold and 11 of those won in athletics, a tally that builds on the 24-medal haul on day two.
