AC Milan beat Atalanta 3-2 at San Siro after leading 3-0, with Gonçalo Ramos, Adrien Rabiot and Mario Gila scoring before Gianluca Gaetano and Nikola Krstovic made the finish tense. The win lifts Milan to 15 points and fourth place in Serie A.
Milan, Italy: For an hour, San Siro watched a team in complete control. For the final half-hour it watched one hold on. Milan had the match won at 3-0, nearly let it slip, and had a penalty save at one end and a late stop from Mike Maignan at the other to remember it by.
A penalty and a Rabiot finish
Milan arrived rotated after their 4-0 Europa League win over Salzburg, with Alphadjo Cissè, the author of that night’s hat-trick, rested. It made no difference to their authority. Atalanta had already lost Sead Kolašinac to injury when substitute Relja Obric was penalised for handball after a VAR review, and Ramos converted the penalty in the 24th minute.
Rabiot doubled the lead in the 43rd minute, finishing from a pass by Diego Moreira. Milan went into the break two goals clear and with the match under control.
Carnesecchi and Gila
The second half began with the sort of moment that can change an evening. Milan won another penalty, Ramos took it again, and Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi guessed correctly to save it. Instead of being punished, Milan scored almost at once. Gila rose to meet a corner and headed in the third, a goal that appeared to settle the match.
Atalanta refuse to leave
It did not. Gaetano, introduced as a substitute, scored with a left-footed finish in the 66th minute. Krstovic made it 3-2 in the 81st minute from a Raoul Bellanova cutback, and the last stretch was played with Milan defending the lead rather than extending it. Maignan had one more important task, saving from Davide Zappacosta late on to protect the narrow margin.
Where Milan stand
The win leaves Milan on 15 points, fourth in Serie A, four behind leaders Inter and two behind Roma in second place. Atalanta stay on nine. For Ruben Amorim’s side, the afternoon offered both a reason for optimism and a warning: control wins matches, but only if it lasts for 90 minutes.
