Tanvi Sharma and Treesa-Gayatri reach Denmark Open quarter-finals as Srikanth and Ashmita exit

Tanvi Sharma and the women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand reached the Denmark Open quarter-finals on Thursday, while Kidambi Srikanth and Ashmita Chaliha went out. Tanvi meets world No. 1 An Se-young next; Treesa and Gayatri face second seeds Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan.

Odense, Denmark: After two days of early exits, India finally had something to celebrate at the Super 750 event. Tanvi Sharma and the women’s doubles pair won their round-of-16 matches in straight games, and both now face daunting quarter-finals on Friday.

Tanvi gets past Yvonne Li

Tanvi beat Germany’s Yvonne Li 21-17, 21-19. Li had already knocked out PV Sindhu in a three-game first-round match, so the win carried extra weight for India. It also continued a solid week for Tanvi, who needed three games to beat Japan’s Natsuki Nidaira in the opening round.

Her reward is An Se-young. The world No. 1 from South Korea reached the last eight by beating Denmark’s Line Christophersen 21-17, 21-9.

Treesa and Gayatri show their class

The women’s doubles pair, bronze medallists at the home World Championships in New Delhi, beat Indonesia’s fifth seeds Rachel Allessya Rose and Febi Setianingrum 21-16, 21-17 in about 45 minutes. They will meet second-seeded Malaysians Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan, who also reached the quarter-finals.

It is the next test for a partnership that has been building since its historic bronze in New Delhi.

Srikanth and Ashmita fall

Kidambi Srikanth’s run ended in three games against Alex Lanier, the reigning world champion, in a match lasting an hour and six minutes. Srikanth won the opening game with his net play, but Lanier’s speed and defence turned the contest. Ashmita Chaliha lost 18-21, 10-21 to Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi.

The earlier exits had been heavier. Lakshya Sen and Sindhu lost on the opening day, and Satwik-Chirag, Ayush Shetty and Unnati Hooda fell on Wednesday.

What comes next

Both Indian quarter-finals are scheduled for Friday. A semi-final place would give India a meaningful result from a week that started badly, and both Tanvi and Treesa and Gayatri have already shown that they can win tight matches at this level.
