Aston Villa beat Fenerbahçe 6-0 at Villa Park, their biggest win in European competition. Nicolas Jackson and Ross Barkley each scored twice, with Johan Manzambi and Tammy Abraham also on the scoresheet, as Unai Emery’s side made it six points from two Champions League games.
Birmingham, England: Four days after drawing 2-2 with Brentford in the Premier League, Villa found their rhythm on a European night and never lost it. It was the club’s first home win in any competition this season, and it arrived in emphatic fashion: six goals, a clean sheet and a record that will stand for some time.
Deflections open the door
Villa took the lead in the 12th minute when Manzambi’s shot took a deflection off Fenerbahçe captain Milan Škriniar and found the net. The goal was Manzambi’s first in the Champions League, on the night he turned 21. Jackson doubled the lead in the 31st minute and scored again in the 39th. Fenerbahçe’s best moment of the first half came when Oğuz Aydın hit the crossbar, and Villa went in at the break with a 3-0 lead.
Barkley punishes Fenerbahçe
The second half brought two more goals in four minutes. In the 68th minute, Barkley converted a penalty after İsmail Yüksek fouled Manzambi. Barkley added his second in the 72nd minute, when his effort deflected in off Bartuğ Elmaz. It was the first time Barkley had scored twice in a game since January 2023. He was substituted in the 83rd minute with an injury, and Leon Goretzka made his Villa debut in his place.
Abraham gets the sixth
Substitute Tammy Abraham made it six in the 90th minute, finishing after Alysson’s build-up play to complete the rout. Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki kept the clean sheet and made several saves to protect it, as Fenerbahçe, who managed 15 attempts to Villa’s 20, found no way past him.
A record night at Villa Park
The victory was Villa’s biggest ever in European competition and left Emery’s side with six points from their first two league-phase matches. For Jackson it was another landmark: he has now scored in four of his first five Champions League starts, the first player to do so since Sébastien Haller in December 2021. It was also a sharp change of tone from their last home game, when Brentford fought back from behind to draw 2-2 at Villa Park.
