Litton’s century sets Afghanistan 479 as Bangladesh close in on victory in Abu Dhabi

Litton Das hit 102 and Bangladesh declared on 372 for 7 to set Afghanistan 479 to win the one-off Test in Abu Dhabi, then removed three of the top order by stumps. Afghanistan ended day four on 132 for 3, needing another 347.

Abu Dhabi, UAE: No team in Test history has chased more than 418, and on Monday Afghanistan were handed a target 61 runs beyond that. Bangladesh resumed on 223 for 6, a lead of 329, and spent the morning stretching it with the bat before declaring and leaving their opponents a testing final day.

Litton’s seventh Test hundred

Litton scored 102 off 117 balls with 14 fours, his seventh Test century and the first by a Bangladesh batter in the match. He added 149 for the seventh wicket with Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who finished unbeaten on 52 off 97 balls. Mohammad Saleem Safi eventually had Litton caught behind, and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto declared at 372 for 7 after 105.2 overs.

Afghanistan wobble early

The chase started badly. Afghanistan were 28 for 2 when Rahmat Shah came in and made 51 to steady the innings, before Ebadot removed him. Ebadot finished the day with 2 for 32, after taking four wickets in the first innings. Hasan Mahmud, whose first-innings hat-trick on day three anchored Bangladesh’s advantage, has so far taken one wicket in the second innings.

At stumps Afghanistan were 132 for 3, with Sediqullah Atal on 35 and Hashmatullah Shahidi on 19. They need 347 more runs, and Bangladesh need seven wickets. Bangladesh made 346 in the first innings, with Shanto on 82 and Mushfiqur Rahim on 81, and bowled Afghanistan out for 240.
