Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez each scored twice as Inter Miami beat D.C. United 4-0 at Nu Stadium on Saturday, ending a five-match winless run. It was Messi’s first game since his Argentina farewell, and his brace took him to 23 MLS goals this season.
Miami, Florida: Four days after he said goodbye to Argentina, Lionel Messi was back at work for Inter Miami. He played all 90 minutes, scored twice and watched Luis Suárez do the same, as Miami ended a poor stretch of form with a 4-0 win over D.C. United.
Suárez makes it two before the break
Miami needed three minutes to settle the night. Suárez scored the opener, set up by Germán Berterame, and the pair combined again in the 39th minute, Berterame’s headed assist leaving Suárez to finish from close range. Miami led 2-0 at half-time.
Messi’s second-half double
Messi joined the scoring at the start of the second half. In the 47th minute Messi finished from a Suárez pass to make it 3-0, and in the 60th he went past defenders, took a pass from Rodrigo De Paul and finished from inside the box. The two goals took Messi to 23 in the league, the most in MLS this season.
A win Miami needed
The result ended a five-match winless run of four draws and a defeat, and was Miami’s first win since a 7-1 rout of CF Montreal on August 29. It was also the first league win for coach Kily González, who took over on September 16. For Messi, it was a quick turnaround after his farewell for Argentina against Benin. Miami host New York City FC on Wednesday.
