Hope’s 102* and Rutherford’s 84 power West Indies to record chase of 250 as India fall in Ranchi

Shai Hope hit an unbeaten 102 off 45 balls and Sherfane Rutherford added 84 as West Indies chased down 250 to beat India by six wickets in Ranchi, the second-highest successful chase in men’s T20Is, with nine balls to spare. The five-match series is level at 1-1.

Ranchi, India: India scored 249 for 5 in a T20I and lost with nine balls to spare. West Indies needed only 18.3 overs to reach 252 for 4, and the man who won it was their captain, Shai Hope.

Samson sets up 249

West Indies won the toss and chose to field, and India made them pay for it. Sanju Samson hit 82 off 41 balls, and he and Ishan Kishan added 97 off 43 balls for the second wicket. Shreyas Iyer made 40 off 18 and Tilak Varma finished unbeaten on 44 off 18, and the closing overs yielded 249. Roston Chase was the pick of the West Indies bowlers with 3 for 24, while Shamar Springer took 2 for 64.

Mayank strikes, then Hope takes over

The chase began badly. Mayank Yadav removed Kamil Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer in the opening over and later dismissed Rovman Powell, and West Indies were 58 for 3 after 5.1 overs.

Hope and Rutherford then added 120 for the fourth wicket, the stand that turned the game. Rutherford hit 84 off 37 balls before Kuldeep Yadav had him caught behind with the score at 178 for 4, and Hope kept going, finishing on 102 not out off 45 balls with nine sixes and six fours. Romario Shepherd then closed the chase with an unbeaten 34 off 13.

A chase for the record books

West Indies’ 252 for 4 is their highest successful chase in men’s T20Is. It is also the second-highest successful chase in the format, behind South Africa’s 259 against West Indies at Centurion in 2023. It ended India’s winning run in the format, which had reached ten in Lucknow, and it came days after Hope’s unbeaten 162 in the third ODI.

What it means for the series

The series stands at 1-1 after two of five matches. India won the opener by eight wickets in Lucknow, and the third T20I is at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Sunday, 11 October.
