Carlos Alcaraz dropped the opening set to Jaime Faria and then conceded five games in the rest of the match, winning 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the third round. Mariano Navone, who beat Novak Djokovic in the first round, added Matteo Berrettini in four sets. Andrey Rublev and Brandon Nakashima were the seeds beaten, by Daniel Merida and Alex Michelsen respectively. Rafael Jodar’s delayed first-round match ended in a straight-sets defeat to Yunchaokete Bu.
New York, United States: Carlos Alcaraz lost the first set on Wednesday night. Then he lost five games.
The defending champion, playing his second match back from a four-month wrist injury, went a set down to Jaime Faria. The response was a bagel, and from there Faria won three games in the third set and two in the fourth. It finished 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, 6-2.
Navone Keeps Going
The Argentine who removed Novak Djokovic in five sets on Sunday has now removed the man who beat Stan Wawrinka.
Mariano Navone lost the opening set to Matteo Berrettini and won the next three, taking the fourth on a tiebreak for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4) victory. He arrived at Flushing Meadows ranked 48th in the world and has beaten a four-time champion and a former Wimbledon finalist in the space of four days.
Two Seeds Gone
Daniel Merida did something similar to Andrey Rublev. The Spaniard lost a first-set tiebreak and then took the match apart, winning 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 to send out the 23rd seed.
Alex Michelsen beat 16th seed Brandon Nakashima in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, in an all-American second-round meeting. Nakashima had conceded three games in his opening round.

Rafael Jodar, the 12th seed and the last teenager in the men’s draw, finally got his rain-delayed first-round match on and lost 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 to Yunchaokete Bu. Alex de Minaur completed his own postponed opener against Andrea Guerrieri without dropping a set.
The Long Way Round
Ben Shelton had the hardest afternoon of the seeded winners. Hubert Hurkacz took the second set and pushed the third to a tiebreak before Shelton closed it out 6-3, 5-7, 7-6, 7-5.
Stefanos Tsitsipas, who removed Arthur Fils in the first round, lost the opening tiebreak to the qualifier Lloyd Harris 7-1 and needed four sets to come through 6-7(1), 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-4. Tommy Paul was two sets up on Dino Prizmic, lost the third on a tiebreak, and finished it in the fourth.
Frances Tiafoe beat Rei Sakamoto 6-3, 7-6, 7-5, and Valentin Vacherot recovered from losing the second set to beat Kamil Majchrzak in four.
The Rest
Daniil Medvedev conceded nine games against Sebastian Gorzny. Alexander Bublik lost five to Adrian Mannarino. Denis Shapovalov opened with a bagel against Luca Van Assche and needed a third-set tiebreak to finish it, and Arthur Rinderknech beat Jaume Munar in straight sets.
Tomas Martin Etcheverry dropped the third set to the lucky loser Jacob Fearnley before winning in four, and Jiri Lehecka came through against the qualifier Toby Samuel.
