Arthur Fils beat Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 to win the Cincinnati Open and claim his first ATP Masters 1000 title, recovering from a one-sided second set to take every game of the decider. The 22-year-old is the youngest French champion in Masters 1000 history and ends a 12-year wait for a French winner at the level. It was the first Masters 1000 final contested by two Black players.

On Sunday night at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, in a final that swung from one player to the other and back, he won the biggest tournament of his life — and made a piece of history doing it.
Twelve of Thirteen Points
Fils began as though he had no intention of letting the occasion become a contest. He broke early and won twelve of the first thirteen points to lead 3-0, attacking Tiafoe’s second serve and pushing the American into errors from the baseline.
Serving at 5-3, he closed the set with three consecutive aces and did not concede a point in the game. It took 6-3, and it looked ominous.
Tiafoe Takes It Back
The second set inverted completely. Tiafoe, the home favourite in his second Cincinnati final, raced to a 3-0 lead of his own and took the set 6-1.

Between sets he used the break to stretch and receive massage treatment on his upper left leg and lower back. He played the issue down afterwards. “My hip bothered me a little bit, but that’s neither here nor there,” he said, adding that he expected to be fine for the US Open.
Six Games, and Three Championship Points
The third set was a rout. Fils won all six games, converting four of the eight break points he earned across the match, and needed three championship points before Tiafoe finally relented. One hour and 28 minutes, and a first Masters 1000 trophy.
“Wow, that feels good,” Fils said, before reflecting on the training, the sacrifice and the injury that had preceded it.
The Records It Carries
At 22, Fils becomes the youngest French champion in Masters 1000 history and only the second Frenchman to win in Cincinnati, after Guy Forget in 1991. He ends France’s 12-year wait for a champion at this level, the last being Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Canada in 2014.
The final was also the first at Masters 1000 level between two Black players, and Fils is the third Black man to win one — joining Tsonga, who won in Paris in 2008 and Canada in 2014, and Ben Shelton, a two-time winner in Canada.
It is his fifth career title and his second of 2026 after Barcelona in April, making him the sixth man to win multiple titles this season. Having reached Masters 1000 semi-finals in Miami and Madrid earlier in the year, he appeared determined not to fall short at the business end of one again.
Where They Go Next
Fils’s route to the title took in Alex de Minaur, Thiago Agustin Tirante and Flavio Cobolli, and he goes to the US Open ranked fifth in the 2026 race.
Tiafoe leaves with a second Cincinnati runner-up finish after his 2024 defeat to Jannik Sinner, and a summer that has not gone his way. He noted he would have two Cincinnati finalist trophies at home and wished both were the winner’s, but took some comfort from five wins over quality opponents in a week that had begun with him recovering from wrist surgery.
