A 3-1 defeat to the Netherlands has left India at the bottom of Pool E with zero points, but a dramatic Argentina win over England the same evening has kept their semifinal hopes mathematically alive — just. Craig Fulton’s side now need the stars to align on Monday.
Amsterdam, Netherlands: The India men’s hockey team find themselves staring down an almost impossible road at the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026. Back-to-back defeats — to England and then to the Netherlands — have left them without a single point, sitting at the foot of Pool E with a goal difference of -4. And yet, they are still in this. Just barely.
Argentina’s 3-1 win over England on Saturday evening was the lifeline India neither earned nor expected. It kept the Argentines and the English level on three points apiece, and more importantly, it kept the mathematics working in India’s favour — for now.
The Numbers India Must Hit
For India to reach the semifinals, two things must happen simultaneously on Monday. First, Craig Fulton’s side must beat Argentina — a team that dismantled them 8-0 and 4-2 in FIH Pro League fixtures earlier this year — by a minimum of two goals. A single-goal win does not suffice; it must be convincing enough to eliminate the South Americans on goals scored or goal difference.

Second, the Netherlands must defeat England, and do so emphatically. The simplest route for India is a Dutch victory by three goals or more, which would drop England behind India on goal difference without the need for tiebreaker arithmetic. Anything tighter, and the calculations become treacherous.
Where It Gets Complicated
Should India win 3-1 and England also lose 3-1, all three teams would finish with six goals scored and eight conceded. At that point, qualification drops to field goals scored — and India are significantly behind. They have just one field goal in this tournament, Dilpreet Singh’s strike against England. England, by contrast, have three — all of them scored against India.
That is the scenario India must avoid. The margin in both results needs to be wide enough that tiebreakers never come into play.
The Cruel Twist
There is one more cruel element to this situation. England face the Netherlands at 10:30 PM IST — a full four hours after India kick off against Argentina at 6:30 PM. England will know exactly what they need. If India do the hard part, England will be playing with complete information, adjusting their approach to squeeze through. India do the business first, then watch and wait.
