India’s semi-final hopes at the Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026 suffered a setback as they lost 2-0 to defending champions the Netherlands in their opening Pool E match at the Wagener Stadium. Yibbi Jansen struck inside two minutes and Frederique Matla added a second in the 38th, both from penalty corners, as the hosts became the first side to reach the last four. India now need to beat Australia and hope the Netherlands beat China.
Amstelveen, Netherlands: India arrived in the second round unbeaten. Ninety seconds later they were behind, and they never got back.
Yibbi Jansen converted a penalty corner in the second minute — the worst possible start against the world No. 1, defending champions and playing at home. The Netherlands then did what they have done to everyone here: found the set piece, converted it, and defended the rest.
Two Set Pieces, and a Wall
Matla’s goal arrived in the 38th, also from a penalty corner, and effectively ended the contest. Jansen’s opener had already taken her tournament tally onward from the nine-goal demolition of Japan earlier in the week.
India had their moments — a penalty corner of their own among them — but never found a way past a Dutch defence that has conceded almost nothing across the tournament. Savita Punia produced a crucial save late in the second quarter to keep the deficit at one, and Xan de Waard passed up a chance that would have made the evening considerably worse.

The result confirms the Netherlands as the first team into the semi-finals, on six points. For India, it ends a run that had taken in a 2-2 draw with China, a 6-1 win over South Africa — their biggest ever at a World Cup — and a goalless draw with England in which they survived 11 penalty corners.
China and Australia Cancel Each Other Out
Earlier in the day, the other Pool E fixture did India no favours and no great harm either.
Zhang Ying put China ahead in the 39th minute, and Australia responded through Abigail Wilson in the 48th for a 1-1 draw. Wilson has been a persistent source of goals in tight matches at this tournament, having also scored in Australia’s 4-4 draw with Chile.
The Arithmetic Is Brutal
Pool E now reads: Netherlands six points, China two, India one, Australia one. India and China carried a point each into the second round from their opening-day draw.
Only one semi-final place remains, and India’s route to it is narrow. They must beat Australia in their final Pool E match on Sunday, and they need the Netherlands to beat China the same day. Anything else and the campaign becomes a classification exercise.
It is a harsh position for a side that has been beaten only once here. But the format rewards nothing except the top two, and the Dutch have taken one of those places already.
What Comes Next
The Netherlands play China on Sunday afternoon and India face Australia on Sunday evening, both at the Wagener Stadium. In Pool F, Belgium meet Germany and Argentina play Spain on Saturday in Wavre.
