Twenty-two years of hurt, then a title – now Arsenal must do it again

The Premier League 2026-27 season begins on Friday August 21 with defending champions Arsenal hosting newly promoted Coventry City, as a new era dawns for English football — Enzo Maresca at Manchester City, Andoni Iraola at Liverpool and Xabi Alonso at Chelsea all begin their first full Premier League campaigns. Newcastle United vs Liverpool on Sunday is the standout opening weekend fixture.

It took Arsenal 22 years to win the Premier League title. Having won it, they now have ten months to defend it — beginning on Friday August 21 against a Coventry City side who have never played in the top flight in their modern history. The 2026-27 Premier League season has a new cast, new managers and a new order to establish. Everything begins at the Emirates on Friday night.

London, England: The 2026-27 Premier League season is the first to begin with an Arsenal banner on its Premier League champions’ wall in over two decades. It is also the first to begin without Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, without Jürgen Klopp’s shadow over Liverpool, and without a settled Chelsea manager. Three of the most consequential managerial tenures in the division’s recent history have ended in the span of eighteen months. What replaces them begins on August 21.

The season starts one week later than usual — the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup, which concluded in July, required recovery time for returning internationals — and runs until May 30, 2027. Before the first Premier League ball is kicked, there is the small matter of the Community Shield on August 16, where Arsenal face Manchester City — FA Cup holders — at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.

The Defending Champions: Arsenal

Mikel Arteta ended his club’s 22-year wait for the title last season with a team that combined defensive solidity, forward invention and an ability to turn draws into wins in the moments that mattered. The summer has brought Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle — the most significant midfield signing at the Emirates since Patrick Vieira — alongside new attacking options. William Saliba signed a contract extension in June. Bukayo Saka returns fit. Viktor Gyokeres, who arrived in January and scored 11 goals in the second half of the season, leads the line.

Their opening fixture against newly promoted Coventry City — Frank Lampard’s Championship winners — is the ideal home start. The acid tests come quickly: a London derby at Fulham in Gameweek 3 and a visit from Chelsea the following week before the November Clásico against City.

The Challengers

Manchester City enter the post-Guardiola era under Enzo Maresca, who won Leicester City the Championship title in 2024-25 and spent last season managing City’s tactical evolution through pre-season and the early stages. Tijjani Reijnders arrives from AC Milan as Maresca’s first major signing. Rayan Ait-Nouri provides left-back cover and creativity. Their opening home fixture against Bournemouth — Sunday August 23 — is undemanding. The Manchester derby in Gameweek 4 is not.

Liverpool have Andoni Iraola as their first manager since Klopp. The Spaniard, who transformed Bournemouth’s playing identity across four seasons, inherits a squad that remains one of the most talented in England but one that drifted without clear leadership after Klopp’s announcement last spring. His opening fixture is the most demanding of any manager in the opening round: away to Newcastle United on Sunday August 23. “I have enormous respect for what was built here,” Iraola said at his unveiling. “Now we build something of our own.”

Chelsea are the most fascinating story of the summer. Xabi Alonso left Bayer Leverkusen in June, two years after their unbeaten Bundesliga title, and walked straight into Stamford Bridge. His first Premier League fixture is a west London derby at Fulham on Monday August 24 — a late start, under the lights, with every pundit waiting to see what Alonso’s Chelsea looks like. Marco Palestra and Morgan Rogers complete a summer of serious investment.

Tottenham under Daniel Levy’s new regime — with new manager Stefano Pioli and signings including Sandro Tonali, Andy Robertson and Folarin Balogun — open away at Brentford on Saturday August 22. A year of transition is underway.

Newcastle United lost Guimarães, Gordon and Tonali in the same summer. They open at home to Liverpool on Sunday August 23. The Matthias Jaissle era begins against the most watched fixture of the opening weekend.

The New Boys

Three clubs are promoted to the Premier League for 2026-27:

Coventry City — Frank Lampard’s side won the Championship with 94 points, playing direct, energetic football built around striker Viktor Olsson, who scored 28 goals. Their first top-flight season since relegation in 2001 begins with the most daunting possible fixture: champions Arsenal at the Emirates.

Ipswich Town — in only their second consecutive top-flight season under Kieran McKenna, Ipswich host Sunderland on opening weekend having secured automatic promotion by finishing second in the Championship. Their continued presence in the Premier League after years in the lower divisions is one of the feel-good stories of recent English football.

Hull City — promoted via the play-offs under Tim Walter, Hull are the division’s wildcard. They host Manchester United in their opening fixture — a dream home debut for the Tigers and a first United visit to the MKM Stadium since 2009.
