Teenager Taneesha Kotecha handed Anna Hursey her first defeat of UTT Season 7 and Zeng Jian sealed the tie in a winner-takes-all decider as HVR Kolkata ThunderBlades beat defending champions U Mumba TT 8-7 on Tuesday in Goa, with both teams confirming their places in the semifinals.
Panaji, Goa: When the UTT Season 7 playoffs begin on July 24, they will feature both the teams who contested Tuesday night’s tie — and each will carry a very different story into the knockout stage. For Kolkata, it is a victory built on youth and nerve. For U Mumba, a defeat that barely dented their qualification, secured through game count and permutations even in defeat. But the manner of the evening — swinging one way, then the other, before Zeng Jian’s final-game 11-5 blitz settled it in Kolkata’s favour — was everything that has made UTT Season 7 compelling viewing.
Ionescu Opens, Taneesha Electrifies
Kolkata struck first through Eduard Ionescu, who recovered from a game down to defeat Manush Shah in three games. It was a composed performance from the Romanian, who has been a reliable operator for Kolkata throughout the campaign, and it put the ThunderBlades in the driver’s seat early.
What followed was the moment of the tie. Taneesha Kotecha delivered one of the upsets of the season with a commanding straight-games victory over the previously unbeaten Hursey — 11-6, 11-4, 11-4 — a scoreline that barely hinted at the quality of the matchup. Anna Hursey had been U Mumba’s most consistent foreign player across the season, and Taneesha took her apart with poise that belied her age. U Mumba Fight Back
The reigning champions were not ready to capitulate. U Mumba fought back in the mixed doubles as Manush and Hursey recovered from an early deficit to defeat Ankur Bhattacharjee and Taneesha in three games, clawing back three points to stay alive at 3-6. The partnership between Manush Shah — one of India’s finest doubles specialists — and Hursey had already proven its quality across the season, and it did so again here under pressure.
Frenchman Lilian Bardet then edged Ankur Bhattacharjee in another hard-fought three-game encounter, winning 9-11, 8-11, 11-6 to make it 6-7 and bring U Mumba within a single point of parity. The tie had been turned on its head in two rubbers, and with Nithyashree Mani — composed and increasingly influential — stepping up for the women’s singles, the momentum was entirely with the defending champions.

Zeng Jian Decides It
Nithyashree levelled the tie at 7-7 with a composed win over Jian in the opening two games. With everything resting on the final game, Jian responded emphatically, sealing an 11-5 victory to hand Kolkata the tie while ensuring both sides progressed to the semifinals.
It was a remarkable turnaround for Zeng Jian, who had been outplayed for the better part of three games before finding something special in a winner-takes-all decider. For Kolkata, it meant a famous win over the season’s benchmark team. For U Mumba, the scoreline stings but the destination remains the same — the semifinals, where they will face Dempo Goa Challengers, the only unbeaten side of the season.
Awards and What’s Next
Taneesha was named the Indian Player of the Tie, while Bardet claimed both the ChatGPT MatchIQ Player and Foreign Player of the Tie awards. Ankur earned the Bisleri Shot of the Tie honour.
The final league fixtures take place on July 22 (Dempo Goa Challengers vs UP Prometheans) and July 23 (Dabang Delhi vs PBG Pune Jaguars), with one playoff spot still to be confirmed. The semifinals begin on July 24 at the same venue, with the grand final set for July 26.
